PACKAGING REFRESH
Sichuan condiments brand Fly By Jing recently updated their packaging as the DTC brand moves to optimize for mass retail.
Since Fly By Jing makes the majority of retail sales, it has made some packaging updates to serve retail customers better.
“There are three seconds that [consumers are] going to see you on-shelf before they decide,” says Fly By Jing founder and CEO Jing Gao.
While the brand stuck with its signature bold red background and bright yellow type – colors that echo the traditional Chinese palette and give a sense of cultural depth and authenticity – they made some strategic tweaks.
Let’s get into the packaging changes:
1️⃣ Less visual clutter: The original packaging was creative but had a lot going on: slim vertical red lines over a transparent background, exposed chili textures, and an unexpected splash of teal at the center.
The refreshed version, with a full red background, feels more cohesive. It heightens the sense of bold flavor and makes the text easier to read at a glance.
2️⃣ Product sneak peek: The new jar has a transparent window in the center so customers can easily see the ingredients inside, which is helpful for buyers who aren’t familiar with the product’s look and texture.
3️⃣ Copy focuses on taste: While the old packaging had more details about the brand story, the new copy focuses more on product taste and use cases.
While Fly By Jing’s packaging refresh doesn’t stray too far from its original look, the design updates make a substantial impact.
Its products are now available in 11,000 stores nationwide, including at major retailers like Target and Walmart.
